Pokemon have taken a new evolution with Pokemon:Ruby/Sapphire Versions. The Pokemon of the Day Chick has helpfully shifted her attentions to Ruby and Sapphire, so you can rest assured that she has your trainer's corner covered. As before, the Pokemon Chick will be taking a personal and detailed look at a Pokemon. You'll find a list of all the moves you will want, and a choice list of recommended moves you want to keep for your prize pet. You'll also find breeding chains, Pokedex entries, stats, descriptions, locations, resistances, gameplay tips and a suggested move set for those of you who can't seem to make up their mind about what to saddle their Pokemon with! ===============================INTRODUCTION============================== Today's Pokemon is Wingull! As far as I'm concerned, Wingull is the first TRUE Water/Flying type to grace the world of Pokemon...sure, we had Gyarados and Mantine back in the day, but you'll never convince Have you played Pokemon Ruby Version? me they are anything other than pure Water types whom the designers felt somehow deserved a compounded weakness. Okay, so maybe Wingull doesn't have the Attack to back up any Flying type moves, but at least he can actually learn them! That's about his only draw, though; you can find better Flying types AND better Water types just about anywhere...well, today is Wingull's day, so I guess I'd better leave all the other Pokemon out of this and just analyze him on his own merits (or lack thereof). |
EVOLUTION: evolves into Pelipper at level 25 CHARACTERISTIC(S): Keen Eye (this Pokemon's accuracy cannot be lowered by an opponent) AVAILABILITY: Ruby, Sapphire LOCATION: If you can't find a wild Wingull, odds are you're legally blind. Heh. They can be found by Surfing in Slateport, Lilycove, Mossdeep and Ever Grande City, Dewford and Pacifidlog Town, or pretty much any route that actually has water. If you'd rather find your Wingull on foot (and at a lower level) you should check out Routes 103, 104, 110, 115, 118, 121 and 123, in addition to Mt. Pyre. ============================MOVES & MACHINES============================= |
Agility: Breed a female Wingull/Pelipper with a male Doduo/Dodrio, Horsea/Seadra/Kingdra, Skarmory, Taillow/Swellow, Wingull, Surskit or Gorebyss. Gust: Breed with a male Masquerain. Mist: Breed with a male Surskit, Swablu/Altaria, Lotad or Wingull/Pelipper (why this thing learns more than one of its hereditary moves naturally I'll never know, but whatever). Twister: Breed with a male Horsea/Seadra/Kingdra or Milotic. Water Sport: Breed with male Psyduck/Golduck, Lombre, Surskit/Masquerain, Pelipper or Milotic. ==============================BATTLE SHEET=============================== Max stats at Level 100 - HP: 284
- Attack: 159
- Defense: 159
- S.Attack: 209
- S.Defense: 159
- Speed: 269
Very effective: Bug Fighting Fire Grass Ground Rock | Less effective: Dragon Electric Steel Water | Resistance to: Bug Fighting Fire Ground, immune Steel Water | Susceptible to: Electric, 4x Rock | Suggested moveset Held Item: none Characteristic: Keen Eye Water Pulse Rain Dance Wing Attack Thief Well Wingull, I'd just like to thank you for this opportunity to eat Murkrow (as it were)...remember how I said you could waste your Water Pulse TM on Surskit because all the other Water type Pokemon worth using can learn Surf? Yeah, well, our friend Wingull here has just proven me wrong; he can't learn Surf either. Lovely. Well, at least Wingull has the option of learning Surf upon evolving into Pelipper. So...uh...until that time you can either hold off on the Water type moves altogether, tell Surskit and Wingull to fight over the Water Pulse TM or else give it to one of them and then breed it on to the other. Wingull and Surskit sittin' in a tree...*shudders violently*. As you can see, I personally decided to go with giving Wingull Water Pulse (let's just say that, being a Flying type, Wingull killed and ate the Bug type Surskit in his quest to claim the TM03 all to himself...ain't no way *I'm* leaving those two in the Daycare Center together; I don't know about you people). Since his offensive stats are unevolved, Wingull really does need the power boost afforded by STAB to make pretty much any attack work. Add to that Wingull's ugly weakness to Rock type moves and you have no excuse NOT to use a Water type move on him. I'm sure Wingull is depressed by the fact that most of the latter-day Rock types aren't half Ground (as they were in RBY/GSC), meaning no quad-weakness for him to exploit...well heck, we can't always get what we want, can we? Rain Dance is as good a filler move as any, so we might as well use it. Wingull can't really hope to damage anything with Water Pulse on its own merits simply because his Special Attack is so darn low, but with the 50% power increase granted by Rain Dance he just might make a decent showing for himself with the move. Wingull is actually insanely fast for an unevolved Pokemon (don't get your hopes up; he suffers a MASSIVE Speed drop upon evolving as opposed to the usual increase), so he could serve as the expendable Rain Dance setup guy if much of your team's movesets revolve around the move (got a bunch of Thunderers, Surfers or even Pokemon with the Swift Swim characteristic? Then you're in luck!). Of course, there's always the concern that Rain Dance makes the opponent's Thunder every bit as accurate as your own...well, fortunately(?) for Wingull his quad weakness to Electric type moves and his piddly 159 Special Defense will ensure that a single Thunderbolt can take him out (so no need to get paranoid about helping out the slightly more powerful Thunder). As I mentioned earlier, Wingull's Flying type moves are hopelessly weak due to his negligible Attack stat. They won't help you out with regards to Wingull's weaknesses either, considering both Rock and Electric types are resistant to Flying type moves; I just HAD to suggest one for Wingull because Gyarados and Mantine would kill me if I didn't (Wingull has to carry the banner for all three of them, you understand). You might as well use Wing Attack, since Wingull learns it on his own at such a low level and the move has been a standard of Flying type movesets ever since the RBY days. Wingull can also learn Aerial Ace, but since Wing Attack and Aerial Ace are equally powerful you should probably save Aerial Ace for a Pokemon that can actually do some damage with it (plus Wingull's Keen Eye protects his accuracy from moves like Sand-Attack, at least, though he's still subject to the nefarious Double Team). Thief is the last move I recommend for Wingull, and is more a testament to just how little effort I put forth when analyzing unevolved Pokemon than anything (heh). There are essentially two reasons I suggest Thief. Reason the First: Wingull is pretty fast, so he should be able to flit in and steal some slow tank's crucial held item right before they crush him into a smoldering puddle of birdlike goo. Reason the Second: since Wingull can only steal an opponent's held item if he himself is not holding anything at the time, I can get away with not recommending a held item for him if I go with Thief. And again I say "heh". Oh come on; you know I would've just recommended something boring and repetitive like Leftovers or Lum Berry again, anyway. Now to come up with a few decent alternate moves...this could be tricky. Well, since Wingull's Special Attack is far superior to his Attack (even though his Special Attack is still pretty lame), you might consider such varied and interesting elemental attacks as Shockwave and Ice Beam. The Rest/Chesto Berry combo are as popular as they ever were, though it'll only benefit Wingull if you have the incredibly good fortune to run into something that can't kill him in one hit. Attract and Double Team might buy you some time if you're actually interested in keeping Wingull alive for a few rounds; if that is the case you'll probably want to see about Baton Passing/pseudo-passing some defense boosters to him before him. Lastly, we have Gust...Gust has always been a remarkably weak attack, but I remember reading something about its effect having been changed in Ruby/Sapphire to include forcing the opponent to switch out. If this is true then Gust could prove exceedingly useful (like the popular Whirlwind, only not forced to go second in battle)...seems a little too good to be true, though, so until I have a chance to test this for myself I mention it as nothing more than a most tantalizing but unconfirmed rumor. Wow...this week really sagged in the middle, didn't it? Eh; I figured I might as well get a few of the more forgettable Pokemon out of the way while the "Gimme a break; I'm new to the game" excuse is still halfway viable. Luckily I saved something good for tomorrow, so at least you won't have to stare at a sucky Pokemon on the front page of IGNFAQs all weekend. So yeah, Wingull is pretty boring overall and his move compatibility definitely leaves something to be desired, but I suppose he's about as good as can be expected for an unevolved seagull. I'm sure you can think of a better moveset than this for him, at least; I fully admit I chose to go the novelty route for Wingull today. You'll probably want to pick one of these things up and evolve it simply because Pelipper can learn the two HMs you're guaranteed to be using more than any others in Fly and Surf, so keep that in mind. As far as human trainer battles go, though, suffice it to say that you can definitely do better. Here's hoping you'll find some use for this briny blue birdie other than as a dust collector, and be sure to join us tomorrow as we wrap up another new week of Ruby/Sapphire Pokemon of the Day!
